Canoeing

Evolved from the preferred means of transport for Polynesians and natives of the Amazon region, canoeing is practiced with a canoe or kayak and paddles. This water sport has been an Olympic sport since 1936. At Escola de Vela da Lagoa, we suggest that you take advantage of our canoes (sit on top – double) for a tour of Lagoa de Óbidos. Canoeing is a great way to explore the outdoors, relax, and have fun. It is one of the most relaxing and enjoyable ways to spend a summer day. Not only will you strengthen your muscles and develop resistance, but above all, you will have all the time in the world to enjoy the lagoon in all its splendor. Alone or with others, relax, have a good time and let yourself be invaded by the lush green of our banks. And why not take the opportunity to surprise your loved one with a tour for two.

When you know how to canoe, you can go on adventures with your friends and family, or even just by yourself. But the first time out on a lagoon or the sea can be nerve-wracking! That's why we're here: we want to help make your first canoe trip an easy one. At EVL, we believe that anyone can learn how to canoe if they have the right training and support. Our instructors are experts in teaching new paddlers how to get started on their journeys down stream. They'll teach you everything from basic strokes and maneuvers all the way through advanced skills like rescue operations and advanced water safety techniques. You'll leave our classes feeling confident in your ability as a paddler—and ready for whatever comes next!

While it's not necessary to know how to swim before learning how to canoe, it's always a good idea to have some experience in the water before attempting to canoe. If you're not already confident in your swimming abilities, you can practice safety skills with one of our instructors. Now that we've covered that important safety note, let's talk about how easy it is to pick up canoeing! You don't need any special equipment—just grab yourself some friends and head out on the water! If you're new to canoeing, it's a good idea to take a lesson or two. Canoeing is a great activity for all ages, but it's especially important for young kids to have some instruction before going out on their own. You'll learn how to use your paddle correctly, how to steer the boat with your weight and how to maneuver around obstacles in the water. It's a fun activity that can be enjoyed by anyone, whether you're a first-timer or an experienced paddler. With the right instruction and equipment, you can easily master canoeing in no time.

Is canoeing for me?

Once again, Obidos Lagoon is a phenomenal place to practice canoeing. What makes it probably the safest and most suitable place in the country are the calm shallow waters, free from waves, currents and maritime traffic, but also its extension and wonderful corners to explore and that never end.

When planning your canoeing session at Escola de Vela da Lagoa you should focus on light wind days, and the morning hours (10 am), in order to maximize your chances of having a perfect day.

This sport is perfectly adapted to all practitioners from 10 years of age, who know how to swim and who feel comfortable in the water. For those who prefer shallow waters, you will find a shallow water plateau in front of the School to practice comfortably.
